Creating a new library To create a new library, either click the 'Create Library' button in the iPhoto Library Manager window, or select 'Create Library' from the File menu. I have many many photos on a very old version of iPhoto (pre 9.0) that's proving a pain to upgrade into Apple Photos on El Capitan. Question is - can I simply copy the 'Originals' and 'Modified' folders that are inside the iPhoto Library out into the Pictures directory itself, and then import these into Apple Photos directly?

I'm using imovie 09 with El Capitan. As you know El Capitan does not include iphoto, so imovie 09 can no longer access iphoto.

Have you tried to update iPhoto to version 9.6.1? This version is running well on El Capitan and iMovie 9.0.9 is showing the iPhoto Libraries in the Photo Browser. The screenshot below is from iMovie 9.0.9 on OS X 10.11.5: I don't know about earlier iMovie versions, if they are still able to see the iPhoto Library.

You can update to iPhoto 9.6.1, if you own a version of iPhoto '11, that is showing in y your Purchases History at the App Store, see Barney'a user Tip:

Can't Update iPhoto because it is not available in the App Store.

To your question (a)

I migrated the iMovie 9.0.9 Libraries to version 10 some time ago, and the conversion was lossless. But I cannot test what will happen now.

iMovie 10.1.2 is showing me all my photo libraries in the Media tab - the iPhoto library, the Aperture Library, the Photos Library, as long as you have compatible applications installed.

And the iTunes Library will be showing in the Audio tab.

When you open a library created by an earlier version of iPhoto, you might see a message that says 'Library version too old. Please upgrade your library 'iPhoto Library' using the free iPhoto Library Upgrader available from Apple.'

Iphoto 9.0.1

The iPhoto Library Upgrader prepares libraries from iPhoto '08 (v7.x) or earlier so that you can use them with the current version of iPhoto or Photos for OS X. If your library was created by iPhoto '09 (v8.x) or later, you don't need to use this tool.

Iphoto 9.0

Using the iPhoto Library Upgrader tool

  1. Download and install the tool. When you see a green checkmark above 'The installation was successful,' click Close.
  2. In the Finder, choose the Go menu and then choose Utilities.
  3. In the Utilities folder, open the iPhoto Library Upgrader.
  4. If the library shown in the window is not the one you want to upgrade, click Choose Library and select the correct iPhoto Library.
  5. Click Continue to upgrade your library.
  6. When you see 'Your library can now be upgraded by the current version of iPhoto. Do you want to launch iPhoto?' click Quit.

You can now use the upgraded library in iPhoto ’11 (v9.x) or later, or you can migrate your library to Photos for OS X if you're running OS X Yosemite v10.10.3 or later.
